Use of hats and swords

Hats

When the procession enters the Head Marshal, the Conferrer and the Master of Ceremonies hold the doctoral hat in their left hand so that the lyra faces forward. When the Conferrer puts the hat on his head the audience will do the same.

While singing the national anthem men take their hats off, women keep theirs on.

In church men take their hats off, women keep theirs on.

At dinner "old" Doctors leave their hats in the cloakroom. Honorary Doctorates, new Doctors, the Conferrer, the Master of Ceremonies and the Head Marshal wear their hats. They wear them also during the old dances.

Swords

When entering the conferment ceremony only the Conferrer, the Master of Ceremonies and the Head Marshal carry their swords.

When leaving the hall Honorary Doctorates and Doctors keep their swords in their left hand. The sword is attached during the break behind the stage.

When entering the church everyone leaves the sword to the marshals. When leaving the church everyone gets his/her sword back from the marshals.

In the evening only the Honorary Doctorates, the Doctors, the Conferrer, the Master of Ceremonies and the Head Marshal carry the sword.
