A dissertation sheds light on successful development strategies of young high tech companies

A doctoral dissertation at Turku School of Economics, looking at the early years of companies in high tech sectors, has found that spin-offs created in business sectors which are closely related to those of their mother companies, are more successful at procuring resources for their development and can more easily overcome challenges.

Spin-offs are new businesses created by former employees of an existing “mother” company to exploit a technology or business idea that was developed, but not pursued by this company. Using data from 156 firms in high technology sectors in Switzerland, this research investigates how spin-off founders are able to mobilize their “social capital”, or in other words the network of informal contacts created during their previous employment, and the good reputation of their mother company.

During the delicate start-up phase, this social capital allows new businesses to obtain financial and material resources more easily and more cheaply, which is crucial when firms are young and have few resources. Spin-offs that are created in sectors which are industrially or technologically similar to those of their mother companies are also more likely to receive support and endorsement from their mother companies. This also helps them on their way, as investors, potential employees and business partners see them as more credible from the start.

The author of the research, Diego Chantrain, explains:

- New ventures are faced with many challenges in their early development years: they have few resources, few employees and limited credibility with which to attract the customers, employees and business partners that could provide the resources for growth. It is often a ‘chicken and egg’ problem. Not surprisingly, the early years of growth are when companies face the greatest difficulties and are most at risk of failing. By looking at how new spin-off firms obtain and utilize their social capital, we gain insights into successful strategies in early development stages.

Names in the Economy – 4th International symposium

Names are a pervasive part of human culture. We give names to referents worth naming – to objects that are meaningful or valuable for us. Also organizations are increasingly aware of the importance of naming; brands and their names are powerful tools in today’s commercial environment. The approval of names for common use always requires a community with a fairly similar vision of the surrounding world. Culture produces names and names produce culture.

The fourth Names in the Economy symposium is hosted by Turku School of Economics on 14–16 June 2012. The conference theme, Names and cultures in a commercial environment, brings out the interdisciplinary nature of the role of names in our global world. The symposium is a continuation to the former symposia held in Antwerp in 2006, in Vienna in 2007 and in Amsterdam in 2009.

Preliminary programme:

Thursday 14th June

10.00 Registration
11.00 Opening
11.15 Keynote: Irmeli Rytkönen
12.00 Lunch
13.00 Keynote: Nicholas Adjouri
14.00 Presentations
Coffee
16.00 Presentations
~19.00 Welcoming reception

Friday 15th June

9.00 Keynote: Ann-Karin Koskinen
        Coffee
10.00 Presentations
11.15 Presentations
12.15 Lunch
13.15 Poster session + coffee
14.00 Keynote: Nicholas Ind
15.00 Presentations
18.00–23.00 Evening programme

Saturday 16th June

9.00 Presentations
Coffee
10.45 Presentations
11.45 Keynote: Paula Sjöblom
12.30 Conclusion
12.45 Lunch

>> For more specific information about the symposium, please visit the Names in the Economy website. Registration has already begun.
