Agora 2020

Agora 2020 project (2005-2007) has been funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Ministry of Education´s Objective 3 programme during 2005-2007. The aim of the project has been to evaluate both the quantitative and the qualitative challenges of environmental and sustainability education in tertiary level up to the year 2020.

The Agora 2020 project brought together experts from various fields who, as an outcome of the process, proposed very concrete visions of the future needs.

United Nations has declared the years 2005-2015 the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. To make this declaration more concrete in Finnish higher education, we organized a Futures Workshop to discuss and envision the future from various viewpoints, among others the doctoral education and the needs of the private sector. In the report we address the needs for change and adaptation in education and working life by presenting different kinds of career
paths and the concrete visions formed in the Agora-workshops.

The project's final report gathers the results obtained in the previously published state-of-the-art report and the scenario report to form a holistic view of the environmental and sustainability education. To simplify the overarching results one can conclude that an integrative
but yet responsible sustainability education is an essential part of the future. Internationalization is both an opportunity and a challenge, in which separate fields should enhance their collaboration. This need is present also in the collaboration of companies and institutes for higher education.
