The cluster analysis "Foresight analysis of the energy cluster in Pirkanmaa region 2010-2020" was funded by the Employment and Economic Development Centre of Pirkanmaa during 1.1.-30.6.2005. The aim was to recognize the remarkable areas of expertice in the energy cluster, to estimate its size, growth possibilities, potential and development needs. The project helps in creating the development strategy for the energy cluster for example in terms of the challenges created by climate change. The project was carried out by a three phase delphi-study. The scenarios were formed based on 25 expert interviews. The scenarios were handled in the internet questionnaire of the second round. The strategy work of the third phase was carried through in a future's studio for the experts of the energy cluster. The results were published in the Energy seminar of Pirkanmaa in 4.10.2005.
The results clearly show, that the future of the cluster seems to be positive. The regional energy cluster has strong historical roots and has been transforming as a respond to the challenge of climate friendly technologies. The expertice of Pirkanmaa energy cluster includes the whole life cycle of energy production from clean energy and fuel production technologies to effective energy distribution and usage. For more, also the services of energy sector are included in the cluster. One success factor is, that the regional R&D infrastructure of universities and other support organisations is strong. Success, however, requires risk investments, strong networking and help of the public sector for developing the cluster.
Pirkanmaa energy cluster is making a development strategy, and is well aware of different challenges both nationally and internationally. The aim of the cluster is to be an internationally recognized area of high level expertice both in R&D and technology markets.
