Megatrends and challenges of waste management in Europe 

Megatrends and challenges of waste management in Europe project was a part of “Streams – Recycling Technologies and Waste Management“ technology programme. The aim of the programme was to create new internationally competitive technologies and business opportunities in recycling and waste management, the focus being on utilising municipal waste streams.

The aim of “Megatrends and challenges of waste management in Europe” project is to view the future scenarios and long-term challenges of waste management by studying the changes of megatrends in the society and assessing their impact on different areas of waste management.

Project was divided in two parts. In the first phase a preliminary report of global megatrends and domestic as well as European challenges associated with the was produced.

Research methods were: literary analysis, Delphi scan and tools developed for analysing material and energy streams and life cycle analysis, such as ETU-tools and UMBERTO -software.

In the second part of the project the focus was on studying how the megatrends defined in the first part affect different areas of waste management. Second phase was carried out as a futures workshop.
