Please note that if you need to take a language test or some other test to prove your English language proficiency, you should book it immediately! The test results need to reach TSE or University Admissions Finland by the end of the application period.

Application period 

In 2012, the application period for international Master’s degree programmes at Turku School of Economics (TSE), University of Turku is December 1, 2011 – January 31, 2012 at 16.15 (GMT+2). Late applications will not be processed.

Kaupan ja palvelujen maisteriohjelma (Master’s Degree Programme in Trade and Services, carried out in Finnish) has a different application period and admission procedure.

Application procedures

The application with all required enclosures must be mailed via regular (air) mail or by an international courier service. E-mailed or faxed applications or enclosures will not be processed.

Applicant may apply for two different Master’s degree programmes in TSE, including the Finnish Master’s Degree Programme “Kaupan ja palvelujen maisteriohjelma", if he/she is eligible. If the applicant applies for two programmes, he/she must submit two complete applications including required enclosures and a signed application form for each programme. Only complete applications will be processed.

We have two different application procedures depending on the applicant’s academic background.

1) Applicants with a Finnish Bachelor’s Degree
Applicants who have completed their higher education degree (Bachelor’s degree or higher) in Finland must use the application form, which can be printed from this web page during the application period (see Application forms).

2) Applicants with other academic background
Applicants with their higher education degree from other countries than Finland must register to the University Admissions Finland's applicant database and use their application template (see Application forms). University Admissions Finland is a centralised application and pre-processing service established by Finnish universities. The admission decisions are made by Turku School of Economics, University of Turku.

General requirements

Language Requirements / Proficiency in English
Prospective candidates should have a good level of proficiency in the English language. Applicants are expected to have passed one of the following tests:

  • TOEFL PBT (Test of English, paper-based). Minimum requirement: 575 points
  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English, Internet-based) Minimum requirement: 92 points
  • CAE/CPE (University of Cambridge Advanced Examination/Proficiency Examination)
    - - Pass grades A, B or C
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System, Academic format) Minimum grade 6,5
  • The test for the National Certificate of Language Proficiency arranged by the Finnish National Board of Education, Average skill level 5
  • GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). Minimum requirement: 520 points.
  • GRE (NB! accepted only for applications for Global Information Technology Management programme): applicant needs to score above the 55% percentile on all sections

The test is not required

  • if the candidate holds the required degree in English from one of the EU or EEA countries, or from Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the U.S.A.
  • if the candidate has a minimum grade of cum laude approbatur in English language exam in Finnish matriculation examination (please attach a certified copy of the certificate in the application) (NB! Accepted only for applications for Global Information Technology Management programme) or
  • if the candidate is applying based on a Finnish university  degree which includes studies in English language with a minimum grade good (3). (NB! Accepted only for applications for Global Information Technology Management programme)

Please note that scores more than two years old cannot be accepted in the case of a TOEFL test.  

Please be prepared that it may take several weeks before the test results are published.

1) Applicants with a Finnish Bachelor's degree
Test results must be sent directly to Turku School of Economics by the organisation administering the test. Photocopies of the test result are not accepted. The TOEFL code for TSE is 9881.

2) Applicants with other academic background
Test results must be sent to University Admissions Finland except for GMAT and GRE tests which must be sent directly to Turku School of Economics. The TOEFL code for University Admissions is 3138. Photocopies of TOEFL, GMAT or GRE test scores are not accepted. For other tests, please address the test results to University Admissions Finland (or in case of GMAT or GRE test, to Turku School of Economics).

Academic requirements
A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent academic qualifications from an internationally recognised university is a requirement for all our Master’s degree programmes. The university has to be listed in the latest edition of the International Handbook of Universities.

Please note that a Bachelor's Degree awarded in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh or Nepal must in most cases be of four years length or followed by a Master's Degree to meet the admission requirements.

Documentation

1) Applicants with a Finnish Bachelor’s Degree
TSE will not process applications if the requested documents are not received either in Finnish, Swedish or English.

All photocopies must be certified. TSE does not certify any documents or photocopies.

Test scores are accepted only if they are received directly from the organisation which administers the test.

Check the specific Master’s degree programmes for further information on other requirements.

2) Applicants with other academic background
TSE will not process applications if the requested documents are not received either in Finnish, Swedish or English. All translations need to be official, i.e. issued by home institution, or an officially certified copy of a translation issued by home institution, or translated by an official translator or an officially certified copy of a translation made by an official translator.

All photocopies must be officially certified (legalised), i.e. they must bear the stamp and signature of an official entitled to attest documents: an authorised school or university official, a notary public, a commissioner of oaths etc. TSE does not certify any documents or photocopies.

TOEFL language test and GMAT and GRE scores are accepted only if they are received directly from the organisation which administers the test. Other test scores need to be verifiable from the test organiser.

Check the specific Master’s degree programmes for further information on other requirements.

Enclosures

TSE maintains the ultimate judgement of the validity of all documents submitted by applicants. However, it is the responsibility of each applicant to ensure that all of the enclosed documents are valid and genuine. In certain cases, the applicant may be asked to provide more evidence in addition to or in support of the documents submitted earlier. Such evidence must be submitted in the form requested within 14 days of request. The use of forged or altered documents will lead to the rejection of the applicant.

The application file must include all the attachments listed below

  • A certified copy of your degree certificate from a higher education institution (and an official translation to Finnish, Swedish or English if the document is in some other language)
  • A certified copy of your transcript, which indicates the grading system of the higher education institution (and an official translation to Finnish, Swedish or English if the document is in some other language)
  • The test score of the test you have taken
  • CV: Please use the Europass CV form
  • A passport photo (not obligatory for applicants with a Finnish Bachelor’s degree)
  • Motivation letter: The applicants with a Finnish Bachelor’s degree or higher must use a separate paper to write the motivation letter. For applicants with other academic background, these questions will be asked in the University Admissions Finland's application template. More detailed information on the content of the motivation letter in each programme is available here.


    If available:
  • A copy of your passport.
  • A copy of diploma supplement.
  • A copy of certificate supplement.

For each Master’s degree programme you have applied for, you must submit a printed and signed application form and a full set of requested enclosures. However, only one language test score is needed. Please note that scores more than two years old cannot be accepted in the case of a TOEFL test. Also, photocopies of TOEFL, GMAT or GRE test scores are not accepted, and other test scores need to be verifiable from the test organiser.

1) Applicants with a Finnish Bachelor’s Degree
Applicants who have completed their higher education in Finland have to use paper application form (available during the application period). Read the instructions for filling in the application carefully. The signed applications with enclosures must be send sent to:

2) Applicants with other academic background
Applicants who have completed their higher education outside Finland will use University Admissions Finland's on-line application template. The form is available in English or in Finnish. By registering on-line as an applicant to the University of Turku, you create a file for yourself in the University Admissions Finland's applicant database. The application template is available during the application period but you can register to the database also in advance. When the application period begins, you can log in to your account and continue with the application process.

There is no registration fee. You can find the link to the University Admissions Finland's on-line registration also on their website under Register. Please note that the Application Form is offline every Monday from 3pm to 5pm (GMT +2) for maintenance.

The information you have given on the template will be compiled into a pdf-document which will become your Application from as you print it out. You can also send it as a pdf-document to your personal e-mail and print it out later. After printing, you must sign the print-out to make it an official application. You should then send the signed print-out to the University Admissions Finland with all the obligatory enclosures (see Enclosures) to secure yourself an applicant status. Mark down your Application Form number into every document, and the number together with the name of the university into the lower left corner of the envelope. The signed applications with enclosures must be send sent to:

If you do not send the signed application form with requested enclosures, you are not considered to be an applicant. Please make sure that your application reaches University Admissions by the end of the application period. Late applications will not be processed.

University Admissions Finland pre-processes the educational certificates including credential evaluation and verifies your language skills. You will receive an e-mail notification when the documents have been pre-processed and, if necessary, a request to supplement your application. You can supplement your application for 14 days after the notification. All applications are sent to TSE for student selections. The final decision about on admission is done by TSE who will also notify all applicants of the admission decision.
