Welcome to the website of the Department of Accounting and Finance! The department specialises in three subjects: Accounting and Finance, Business Law and Quantitative Methods in Management. The department employs seven professors, about 20 other members of teaching and research staff and four persons handling administration.
By many standards (such as number of students who major in the subject, the number of M.Sc. theses completed and the number of ECTS units earned per year), Accounting and Finance is the largest single subject at the Turku School of Economics. About 60-70 students per year select Accounting and Finance as their major subject, and a large number also study it as a minor subject. Research and teaching in Accounting and Finance cover the fields of management accounting, financial accounting, and finance, including auditing.
Business Law is the largest minor subject at the Turku School of Economics, and it is also a versatile choice as a major. Studies in Business Law emphasise company operations, markets and the management of legal risks related to the financial security of business owners. Once they graduate, students who major in Business Law find jobs, which require experts particularly in matters concerning corporate, market, financing, contractual and tax law.
Quantitative Methods in Management is responsible for the teaching offered by the Turku School of Economics in statistics and mathematics, emphasising the economic applications of these fields. Research conducted in this subject deals mainly with applications of stochastic control theory in investment decision-making and in the financial theory behind these issues.
The Department of Accounting and Finance aims fully to implement the strategy of the Turku School of Economics, in which the achievement of the position of an internationally recognised organisation of academic expertise is of key importance. The faculty of the department work actively both in Finland and internationally, and have an extensive network of co-operation with researchers and companies.
