Welcome to the Department of Accounting and Finance website! Accounting and Finance is the largest single subject at the Turku School of Economics and Business Administration in many ways - for example, in terms of the number of students who major in the subject and the number of credits completed per year. Our staff currently includes three professors, three lecturers and ten senior research associates, research assistants or other researchers, as well as a departmental co-ordinator and an educational and research secretary. About 60 students per year select accounting and finance as their major subject.
Research and teaching in Accounting and Finance cover the areas of management accounting, financial accounting and corporate finance, including auditing. The subject is at the core of business economics as it examines the field of corporate finance measurement, communications and management. The most important questions in terms of Accounting and Finance are the profitability of financial units, economic efficiency and financial balance.
The information produced by means of accounting has important significance in the control and direction of a company’s operations, decision-making and the communications aimed outwards from a business enterprise. Accounting forms the foundation, system and language for these things mentioned, which everyone who works in a business enterprise should master. A Master of Science in Financial and Management Accounting has an explicit job description in a business enterprise, and may work in three alternative areas: as support for the company’s internal management in accounting and finance operations, in externally oriented jobs connected with business accounting and financial statement information (incl. auditing), or in planning and analysis functions associated with the company’s financing. Accounting studies aim at the student having, after the end of studies, the readiness to independently make decisions concerning a firm’s finances as well as perceive problems and present various solution options for the same.
