Admission requirements 2012 

Please note that if you need to take a language test or some other test in order to prove your English language proficiency, you should book the test immediately due to the large number of people taking the tests at this time of the year.

The Master's Degree Programme in Global Innovation Management admits about 25 students annually.

Information on the 2012 round of applications

Application period: December 1, 2011 - January 31, 2012
Admissions decisions will be announced in May at the latest.
Admitted candidates must accept their student placement by the end of July and the studies will start at the end of August 2012.

Please note that admitted students might need to complete supplementary studies in addition to the programme studies. The supplementary studies are determined based on the students' previous university-level studies.

Phase 1 General Requirements

Academic Requirements

All applications are pre-screened and short-listed based on the eligibility of the applicants. To be short-listed applicants must have one of the following degrees (degree earned at the time of applying):

1. Degree requirements
a) Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration
b) Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
c) Bachelor of Business Administration from a Finnish Polytechnic
d) Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Food Chemistry, Molecular Biotechnology or In Vitro Diagnostics
or corresponding foreign university degree that meets the Finnish criteria.

Applicants with a Finnish Master of Science degree in Economics and Business Administration (kauppatieteiden maisteri) are not eligible to apply.

2. Studies in Business Science
The previous university level studies must include a minimum of 30 ECTS credits in business science studies.

3. Minimum Grade
The grade of the applicant's major studies should be 3 or better for students graded on a grading scale of 1-5. The minimum for all other grading systems should be average or better. If the applicant's certificate does not indicate the grade for the major studies, the average grade will be calculated from all courses indicated in the transcript of records.

4. Language Requirement
Prospective candidates should have a good level of proficiency in the English language. Applicants are expected to have taken one of the following tests:

  • TOEFL PBT (Test of English, paper-based). Minimum requirements: 575 points
  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English, Internet-based) Minimum requirements: 92 points
  • CAE/CPE (University of Cambridge Advanced Examination/Proficiency Examination)
    - - Pass grades A, B or C
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Minimum grade 6,5
  • The test for the National Certificate of Language Proficiency arranged by the Finnish National Board of Education, Average skill level 5
  • GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). Minimum requirement: 520 points.

 
The test is not required if the candidate holds the required degree in English from one of the EU or EEA Countries, or from Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the U.S.A.

Phase 2 Selection Criteria

The eligible applicants will be graded on pre-determined points based on the following criteria:

1. Bachelor's thesis
Grade awarded for Bachelor's thesis:

  • Grade 3 = 10 points
  • Grade 4 = 30 points
  • Grade 5 = 50 points

(If the applicants previous studies are not graded on a scale of 1-5, the grading scale will be converted to a scale of 1-5). Applicants who have not written a thesis as part of their previous degree will earn no points in this section. Applicants whose thesis is graded on a scale of pass/fail will earn 10 points.

2. Previous Business Studies
Previous business studies: 1 ECTS credit =1 point. The points are scaled to a maximum of 50 points.Scaling means that the applicant with the highest number of previous business studies will get 50 points, and other applicants' points are determined in relation to this.

An example: The applicant with the highest amount of previous business studies has completed 200 ECTS cr of such studies and gets 50 points. Applicant A has 100 ECTS cr of previous business studies and applicant B 160 ECTS cr. Applicant A receives 25 points and applicant B 40 points.

3. International Business Studies
Previous studies in international business: 1 ECTS credit = 1 point, scaled to a maximum of 50 points.

4. Grade of major studies
The grade of the applicant's major studies,on a grading scale of 1-5. If the applicant's certificate does not indicate the grade for the major studies, the average grade will be calculated from all courses indicated in the transcript of records.

  • Grade 3 = 0 points
  • Grade 4 = 30 points
  • Grade 5 = 50 points

(If the applicants previous studies are not graded on a scale of 1-5, the grading scale will be converted to a scale of 1-5).

5. Studies abroad
If a minimum of 150 ECTS credits of the applicant's university-level eligible studies were undertaken in a country other than Finland : + 70 points

6. Technology-related studies
If the applicant has at least 25 ECTS credits in technology-related studies: +50 points
