Please note that if you need to take a language test or some other test in order to prove your English language proficiency, you should book the test immediately due to the large number of people taking the tests at this time of the year.
Information on the 2012 round of applications
Application period is 1 December, 2011 - 31 January, 2012.
The application process has two phases: the eligibility of the applicants is checked on Phase 1, and the final selection is done on Phase 2 according to the selection criteria.
Phase 1 Eligibility requirements
In the Global Information Technology Management programme, the students select one of the following degree preferences:
Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration (Business Informatics track) or
Master of Science (Work Informatics track).
The eligibility of the applicant is checked according to his/her degree preference.
1. Degree requirements
The applicant needs to have completed one of the following degrees by the end of the application period:
1) University level Bachelor's degree corresponding a Finnish Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration (about 5 students' quota)
2) University level Bachelor's degree equivalent to a Finnish Bachelor of Science (majoring in information systems, computer science, software engineering, or industrial engineering and management) (about 12 students' quota)
3) Bachelor of Business Administration or Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Science) from a Finnish University of Applied Sciences (about 8 students' quota)
2. a) Previous studies in Business Sciences and Information System Science (for applicants for a Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration degree)
The previous university level studies need to include a minimum of 30 ECTS credits in Business Science studies and a minimum of 10 ECTS credits in Information Systems Science.

2. b) Previous studies in Information Systems Science (for applicants for a Master of Science degree)
The previous university level studies need to include a minimum of 30 ECTS credits in Information Systems Science.
3. Minimum grade
The grade of the applicant's major studies should be at the average level, 3 or better for students graded on a grading scale of 1-5. The minimum for all other grading systems should be average or better. If the applicant's certificate does not indicate the grade for the major studies, the average grade will be calculated from all courses indicated in the transcript of records.
4. Language requirement
Prospective candidates should have a good level of proficiency in the English language. Applicant are expected to have taken one of the following tests:
- TOEFL PBT (Test of English, paper-based), minimum requirement: 575 points.
- TOEFL iBT (Test of English, Internet-based), minimum requirement: 92 points.
- CAE/CPE (University of Cambridge Advanced Examination/Proficiency Examination): pass grades A, B, or C.
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System), minimum grade: 6,5.
- The test for the National Certificate of Language Proficiency arrange by the Finnish National Board of Education, average skill level: 5.
- GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), minimum requirement: 520 points.
- GRE: Applicant needs to score above the 55% percentile on all sections
The test is not required
- if the candidate has completed a university degree in English in one of the EU/EEA countries, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the U.S.A.
- if the candidate has a minimum grade of cum laude approbatur in English language exam in Finnish matriculation examination (please attach a certified copy of the certificate in the application)
- if the candidate is applying based on a Finnish university degree which includes studies in English language with a minimum grade good (3).
5. Motivation letter
Each applicant is required to write a motivation letter, and in order to be deemed eligible, the applicant needs to earn at least 20 points from the letter. The maximum score is 40 points. The points are not taken into consideration in the final selection (Phase 2). If the application does not include a motivation letter, the application will not be processed.
In the motivation letter, the applicant should answer the following questions:
1. What do you know about the Global Information Technology Management Master's degree programme? (0-10 points)
2. Why are you applying for this Master's degree programme and how do you see your future after graduation from this programme? (0-10 points)
3. What kind of education background and work experience do you have? How do you feel it fits this Master's degree programme? (0-10 points)
4. How do you think you will be able to combine studies in this programme and your personal life? What kind of challenges do you expect to face during your studies and how are you planning to conquer them? (0-10 points)
Applicants with a Finnish Bachelor’s degree or higher must use a separate paper to write the motivation letter. The letter is written in English, and the length of the letter cannot exceed 4000 characters.
For applicants with other academic background (degree completed outside of Finland), these questions will be asked in the University Admissions Finland's application template (section Motivation letter and Additional questions).
The motivation letter is scored based on the following content:
- The applicant's familiarity with the content and foci of the Master's degree programme (0-10 points)
- The suitability of the applicant's learning goals to the possibilities the programme offers (0-10 points)
- The suitability of the applicant's study and work experience as a base for studying in the programme (0-10 points)
- Presenting a realistic study schedule (0-10 points)
Phase 2 Selection of candidates:
If the number of applicants meeting the criteria above exceeds the total number of students per quota to be selected to the program, the following criteria will be used to rank order the applications. The applicant needs to earn a minimum of 100 points in order to be admitted.
1. Grade awarded for Bachelor's thesis
- Grade 1 = 10 points
- Grade 2 = 20 points
- Grade 3 = 30 points
- Grade 4 = 40 points
- Grade 5 = 50 points
Applicants who have not written a thesis as part of their previous degree will earn no points in this section.
Applicants whose thesis is graded on a scale of pass/fail will earn 25 points.
(If the applicants previous studies are not graded on a scale of 1-5, the grading scale will be converted to a scale of 1-5).
2. Previous studies in Information Systems Science
Previous studies Information Systems Science: 1 ECTS credit =1 point. The maximum score is 50 points.
3. Grade of Information Systems Science studies
The average grade of the applicant's previous studies in Information Systems Science on a grading scale of 1-5.
- Grade 1 = 10 points
- Grade 2 = 20 points
- Grade 3 = 30 points
- Grade 4 = 40 points
- Grade 5 = 50 points
(If the applicants previous studies are not graded on a scale of 1-5, the grading scale will be converted to a scale of 1-5).
4. Grade of degree studies
The average grade of all the studies included in the previous degree on a grading scale of 1-5.
- Grade 1 = 10 points
- Grade 2 = 20 points
- Grade 3 = 30 pointa
- Grade 4 = 40 points
- Grade 5 = 50 points
(If the applicants previous studies are not graded on a scale of 1-5, the grading scale will be converted to a scale of 1-5).
If two or more applicants have the same total score, the following criteria will be used to rank order the applications:
1. The amount of studies in Information Systems Science
2. The grade of studies in Information Systems Science
3. The grade of the Bachelor's thesis
How to apply?
The applicant may apply for one or two degree tracks within the Global IT Management programme. The preference order of the two degree tracks needs to be indicated in the application.
Applicants with a Finnish Bachelor’s degree will mark their preference on the paper application form.
Applicants with other academic background (degree completed outside of Finland) will choose the on-line application form according to their only or primary preference:
- If you want to apply only or primarily for the studies leading to a Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration degree, fill in the application template for the programme Master's degree programme in Global Information Technology Management.
- If you want to apply only or primarily for the studies leading to a Master of Science degree, fill in the application template for Master's degree programme in Global IT Management, Work Informatics.
