The doctoral hat is an ancient symbol of liberty; for universities, it symbolises scientific freedom. The colour of the hat indicates the field of science. At Turku School of Economics, the hat is black.
The hat resembles a top hat. Coated in soft shiny satin, it has a hard crown and a fairly narrow, straight brim. The crown is coated with pleated fabric, and the hat has a velvet band bearing the lyre of Turku School of Economics.
The lyre of Turku School of Economics attached to the hat was designed by artist Pertti Örnberg in 1988.

The doctor's sword (85 cm or 95 cm) is engraved and bears the gilded emblem of Turku School of Economics. It also comes with a belt loop and scabbard. The price of the sword is 310 €.
