Research
Generally, entrepreneurship has been considered to be most suitable career option for the middle-aged. Based on a recently finalised study by the TSE Entre entrepreneurship can be a potential and a desirable career choice also for other “less typical” groups. For young people entrepreneurship can offer a route to the working life. Among some occupational groups, such as translators, interpreters and freelance journalists, entrepreneurship can be a typical way to employ oneself in the field. For aging people entrepreneurship can offer a way to little by little exit the labour market. Especially part-time entrepreneurship gives a possibility to continue in the working life in the stage of a career when full-time work is no longer attractive or feels too heavy.
The research project, financed by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy , concentrated on studying entrepreneurship as a part of individual’s career especially among young (18–29 years) and aging (55 years or over) population. The research material consists of several surveys targeted to various professions and target groups as well as a large panel data of the labour statistics of Statistics Finland.
The research report will be published in the series of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy in November 2008. The results of the research will be released by the Minister Tarja Cronberg on the 25th of November 2008 in the Ministy of Employment and the Economy. The electronic version of the report will be then available in the Ministry’s web page (in Finnish).

TSE Entre (in cooperation with Institute for Competition Policy) launched the new research project called “Innovativeness as a success factor in changing competition environment”. The project is funded by Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation) and its duration is 2 years. Project was launched on August 2008. Also foreign research partners (e.g. from Norway and United States) are participating in the project.
The project aims at providing new information and know-how from the relationships between competitive environment, innovativeness of the firm and firm’s different innovation types. In addition, the focus of the study is also on the relationships between firm growth and innovativeness.
Project studies the role of firm’s competitive environment and the role of its dynamic behavior as explaining factors behind the innovativeness, growth and internationalization of the firm. Research highlights especially the good practices identified from Finnish top companies. These practices are also compared with the international findings.
As a result, research offers recommendations for the improvement of innovation environment and for the advancement of growth entrepreneurship. Hence, the results of the study can be utilized, in addition of Tekes, by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy.
