The Information Service provides customers with guidance and counselling in the use of the Library and its materials. It also carries out data retrieval on assignment in accordance with the customer’s theme and wishes from the versatile materials available.
This service is primarily targeted to the staff and students of Turku University and Turku School of Economics. For the staff, data retrieval for instruction and research purposes is free-of-charge. For external users, compensation is charged in accordance with the price list for services.
The licence terms for materials acquired by the Library and Information Services are taken into account in the service performed. Generally speaking, the use of data for commercial purposes is prohibited. The Information Service also provides information literacy instruction to students during the various stages of their studies. This instruction is given during the first academic year and, as required, in introductory and subject-oriented courses. In connection with working on a Bachelor’s degree, a mutual ”Bachelor’s Start” is arranged for all candidates for the degree, as well as guidance in the foundations of information literacy per candidate group.
Further instruction in information literacy is given during the Master’s thesis stage on an individual thesis group basis. In addition, the student has the opportunity to obtain personal guidance in data retrieval from an informatician as the dissertation work progresses. Instruction in data retrieval is also included in the degree requirements of post-graduate students as well.
